These are a few of my favourite things…
If you want to get to know me and what I’m about, this is a good place to start. Generally, I’m a happy person. I’ve had my struggles with depression, but when it comes down to it, I like to be happy. Don’t we all? I believe we were made to be happy. Not to be happy in ourselves, or others, or in our situations, but to be happy in God. And I think that the best way to be happy in the Lord, outside of a personal, saving relationship with Him, is to be all that He has created us to be. To embrace who we are and live it out, for His glory and fame.
Here are five things that make me happy. Five things about who I am that I love to embrace and enjoy and praise God for. Five things that may help you to know and understand a little more about me.
There’s something addictive about feeling your brain work. I love the feeling I get when I grasp something well and can apply it. I love to research and discover and understand. This means that Bible study is a joy – the Spirit speaks to me and opens my eyes to things in the Word that I never noticed or understood before. I feel lighter, more equipped and capable in my walk with the Lord. It also means that I’m a good student. I learn quickly and have a good short-term memory. I enjoy studying in my field of psychology and feel energized after exams, ready to tackle the next course. Finally, I learn well by watching and listening to others. I find great value in drawing from other people’s experiences – their successes and failures.
Once I’ve grasped something and the figurative lightbulb flickers on, I get so excited and wish for everyone to share in my joy. Maybe this is why blogging is a good idea for me – because, let’s face it, my friends get pretty tired of me talking about myself and telling them what to do. I love to teach and watch the light come on in someone else’s mind. I love to craft my words and say things well. I love to share my own experiences and inspire others. This means that I’m all about discipleship and counselling. I have a great heart for young people. I’m terrible with youth groups because I am definitely NOT cool enough, but I do well one-on-one or in small groups.
My family has the ability to cause me the greatest grief, yet they continue to bring immense joy. My husband is tender, generous, hard-working and doggedly loyal. He makes me laugh until I cry and picks me up when I am down. He, like me, is passionate about ministry and young people, and shares my love for good food. Oh yes, he makes me very happy. My son has a smile that turns every head. His laugh melts my heart and his cuddles keep me warm. Although he is still small, I look forward to many years of his bringing joy and laughter into our home.
My husband and I are foodies. Not the hipster, organic or nothing kind. We just love good food. We enjoy trying new things and exploring different cultures. Asian cuisine is high on our list, our favourites being Vietnamese and Thai. While my husband prefers the savoury and spicy side of things, I am definitely on the dessert side of the fence. I’m the kind who would have leftover cake for breakfast if it wasn’t so bad for me. I will always appreciate good coffee, sips of wine, soft cheeses, gourmet milkshakes and dark chocolate. Just keep your stinking seafood far away!
This is my final entry for the list, and I’m only listing it last because you have to understand my love for food to fully understand this part of me. I am creative. God is the Creator of all and I am just awestruck at how He has imprinted His image onto each human being by giving them, too, the ability to create. My creative abilities lie in a number of categories. Firstly, I like to craft. Working with my hands relaxes me. I scrapbook, sew, crochet, draw, and design. Secondly, I like to work in the kitchen. I enjoy cooking, but once again, I with the sweeter side of things far more often. My dream would be to bake for a coffee shop and make different kinds of fancy cakes and sweet treats every week, each one beautifully decorated for all to see. And I wouldn’t have to clean, because despite my love for cooking and baking, I despise the mess it makes and how long it takes to clean it all up. However, my love is greater than my hate – and that is why my husband has gained a few pounds since we got married. Finally, I love to create atmosphere – if that counts as creating. I often refer to my brain as an idea factory, constantly coming up with plans to make a normal day special. Plan your birthday party? Of course! Help with your baby shower? I’d love to! Throw together an awesome date night? My speciality.
And there they are. As promised. Five things that make my heart sing. You are now well on your way to becoming an expert at me.
Just kidding. I’m waaaay more complicated than that.
